About 70 Short-Term Rentals Found, and No Board Yet to Regulate Them
Townwide · Board of Health · Nov 1, 2026
Milton's health director wants short-term rentals inspected yearly, but a board member warned part-time staff cannot absorb the work.
- Who regulates: the Board of Health or the Select Board, undecided at the health board's Oct 26 discussion. Select Board rules would need Town Meeting, aimed at spring.
- Inspections: state language says every five years. Health, fire and building inspectors would share them; police are not interested in enforcement.
- Staff: the health clerk works two days a week, the nurse three. The member wants rental inspectors separate from renovation inspectors.
- How many: about 70 rentals identified so far, possibly 100 or more. Residents already complain about overflowing trash.
- Next: fees, enforcement and a guest limit are open. Members want a working group; the board next meets Dec 7.
- Earlier: the Planning Board floated a $500 fee Oct 15 and takes up rentals again Nov 4.
