Water Main Borrowing on Hold After $3M Loan Left Off Debt Schedule
Townwide · Town Meeting · Oct 31, 2026
Milton put off $2.28 million in water main borrowing after finding a nearly $3 million loan missing from its debt records.
- The vote: Town Meeting sent the request, Article 3, back to the Select Board on Oct 19, 216 to 1, as the Select Board and Warrant Committee recommended.
- What went wrong: a loan of almost $3 million from November 2024 had dropped off the water fund's debt schedule, Town Administrator Nick Milano said. It costs about $300,000 a year. He said town staff and the town's financial adviser all missed it.
- The streets: Governors Road, with mains from 1915 and 1932, plus Franklin and Bassett streets, to be done alongside the apartment project there. Work was planned for 2027 and 2028.
- Next: the town will check what more debt would mean for water rates before any new request. The no-interest state water authority loans have no deadline, and Milano said the request can wait until the annual Town Meeting in May.
