After Cutting 7.9 Positions, Milton Schools' Special Education Contracts Top Budget by $2.3M
Milton Public Schools · School Budget · Oct 31, 2026

Milton's schools cut 7.9 positions to balance this year's budget, and special education contracts already exceed their budget line by $2.3 million.
- The overrun: by Sept 30, money spent or committed by contract for outside special education services reached $9.33 million, against a $7.02 million budget for the year, the first-quarter report shows. The report doesn't say how the gap will be covered.
- This year's cuts: the town gave the schools $75.6 million for FY2027, about $1 million short of keeping services level. The schools cut 7.9 positions worth $711,137, including the arts and data directors and a high school English teacher. Three were vacant.
- Other savings: supply and stipend lines shrank, and bus and building-use fees went up. The plan also takes $400,000 more from the state-funded special education reserve, which held $1.26 million on July 1.
- Next year: a first draft for FY2028 runs 4.88% above this year, the School Committee's finance subcommittee heard Oct 14. Every point less means finding about $750,000.
- Next: the School Committee drafts the FY2028 budget in December and votes on it in January, after a public hearing.
