Milton Has $6.4M Left Over From Its Last Budget Year
Townwide · Follow-up · Nov 5, 2026
Milton ended the budget year that closed June 30 with $6.4 million left over, town finance staff told a town-school budget committee Oct 30.
- Free cash: This leftover is called free cash. Town Meeting can vote to spend it later. The state approved the figure Oct 5. It was a report, not a vote.
- Water and sewer: Water and sewer bills pay for those systems, and their money is kept apart from the town budget. Those accounts also ended the year with money left: $3.3 million for water and $1.7 million for sewer.
- Schools: Milton Public Schools ended the year on budget. They also reached their goal of keeping $1 million in a special account that pays for some school services.
- Unemployment: The town has nearly used up the $100,000 it set aside this year for unemployment benefits it owes former employees. Staff will cover the rest from the reserve fund, money Town Meeting sets aside for unexpected costs.
- Snow: The town raised its snow and ice budget from $160,000 to $250,000 this winter. Public works has 25 of its 26 crew jobs filled, the most in years. Staff said town crews cost less than outside contractors.
- Labouré: If voters approve paying for it on Dec 15, the town would buy the property in January or February and pay its upkeep from the reserve fund at first.
