Milton School Committee Votes Wednesday on What It Wants in Its Next Superintendent
Townwide · School Committee · Oct 26, 2026
Milton's School Committee votes Wednesday night on the qualities it wants in a new superintendent, a step toward hiring one by January.
- The vote: the School Committee meets Wednesday, Oct 28, at 7pm. Its agenda lists a report from HYA, the search firm it hired, and then a vote on "Superintendent Desired Characteristics", the qualities the committee wants in its next superintendent.
- Where the list comes from: since late September, HYA's two consultants have collected input through an online survey that anyone could fill out, focus groups of up to 15 people, and three community forums. They then use that input to screen the full applicant pool and choose who gets a first-round interview, committee members said on Sept 16.
- Timeline: on Sept 16 the committee said it wants to begin interviewing candidates in November and to offer the job to a new superintendent in January. John Phelan has led the district as interim superintendent since 2025.
- Also Wednesday: the superintendent presents the district's spring 2026 MCAS results. At 8am that day, the committee's finance subcommittee, joined by the full committee, takes up the first quarterly report on this year's budget and starts on the FY2028 budget.
- How to watch: the meeting is at the former fire station headquarters, in the Katherine Haynes Dunphy Conference Room, and on Zoom (webinar 921 8763 6807). Public comment, 15 minutes, comes near the start.
