Town Meeting Gives Tucker Playground $300,000 Toward a Summer 2027 Rebuild
Tucker School · Town Meeting · Oct 26, 2026

Town Meeting voted $300,000 for the Tucker School playground, keeping a full rebuild on track for summer 2027.
- The vote: on Oct 19, Town Meeting approved Article 4, 218 to 1 with 2 abstaining: $300,000 in Community Preservation Act money for a complete redesign of the Tucker School playground. The Community Preservation Committee recommended it unanimously and brought it to the fall meeting instead of next spring so construction can happen while school is out.
- What changes: the playground is now mostly asphalt, its play structure can't be reached by a child in a wheelchair, and an old climbing wall is taped off. The new design by landscape architects KZLA adds a multi-use field, new play structures, a multi-use court, an outdoor classroom, a grove with a rain garden and a performance space, all accessible.
- Cost: about $1.45 million in all: $147,000 already spent on a mural, a site survey and the design (including $102,000 from an earlier CPA grant), and about $1.3 million to build.
- Funding: besides the $300,000 from CPA, the PTO's slides list a $250,000 state earmark, $30,000 from the Milton Foundation for Education and $113,000 from community fundraising. A $450,000 federal request through Rep. Ayanna Pressley's office is under review, and the PTO is looking for about $160,000 more in private and grant money.
- Next: a bid for play equipment in January or February 2027, a contractor in the spring, construction starting in June 2027 and an opening in fall 2027.
- Background: Tucker serves about 450 students and a summer camp, and the PTO says the playground hasn't had a meaningful upgrade in over 20 years. Its playground committee formed in spring 2025 and gathered ideas through a town-wide survey and an April 2026 event at the school.
