Milton Cancels Flock Contract and Will Take Down Its License Plate Cameras
Townwide · Oct 19, 2026 · Select Board
Milton is ending its Flock license plate camera program after months of resident objections over privacy.
- The vote: the Select Board voted 5-0 on Oct 6 to cancel the town's contract with Flock Safety and remove its cameras. Town counsel KP Law had advised that, because of how the contract was procured, Milton can cancel without significant liability, Town Administrator Nick Milano reported.
- How it got here: residents began emailing the town about the cameras this summer, and many spoke against them at board meetings in September. On Sept 22 Police Chief John King defended them as an investigative tool for solving crimes and finding missing or endangered people, and said data not tied to a case is deleted after seven days. The board then voted 5-0 to freeze the cameras for 90 days while counsel reviewed the contract.
- Town Meeting: on Oct 19, Town Meeting sent a citizens' petition on surveillance technology (Article 9) back to the Select Board for further study by voice vote. Board Chair Winston Daley called it moot after the cancellation, and a petitioner asked for the referral too, according to the meeting video's auto-generated transcript.
- Next: no new system before a town policy. Board members agreed any future license plate reader should follow a written policy on how data is stored, accessed and kept, with community input and legal review, and staff are looking at options that keep data under local control. No date is set for removing the cameras.
